Dear Church Family, In this Stewardship season, we have...
Thank You, Salem First
As of March 31, our church’s five-month commitment to provide shelter on freezing nights has come to an end. This winter was milder than most, with 12 nights of activation, lighter than last year’s 30 nights, but no less meaningful. Each time the call came to open, our volunteers responded immediately, filling all five overnight shifts without hesitation. No arm-twisting needed, just people showing up for one another. A special thank you to Sue Crothers for leading this effort with such care and consistency. Your coordination and heart for this work made it all possible.
We are also grateful for those who joined in this year, including newer members of our church family like Kaylee Tornay, Brittney Withrow, Tyler Studebaker, and Cheryll Meyer, along with partners from Westminster Presbyterian Church and Rotary International. Sharon Klocksieben and her shopping team made sure we had what we needed through donated funds, and many others contributed behind the scenes.
Because of this collective generosity, we were able to provide 887 bed nights and 50 pet shelter nights. We served hot meals and created a space of warmth, safety, and dignity. Every night mattered.
We also extend our gratitude to Salem’s homeless advocate community, Courtney Place Veteran’s Housing, and other faith and service partners, as well as the many volunteers within our own congregation who hosted, stayed overnight, and cared for our guests. And finally, thank you to the dozens of staff and volunteers from ARCHES Community Action Agency who helped oversee and clean the sleeping area night after night.
